Course Outline

In this lesson, we’ll get familiar with SketchUp’s interface. We’ll configure your workspace and get comfortable with its tools, trays, and dialogs.

In this lesson, we’ll cover all of the navigation tools, including the orbit, pan and zoom tools. We’ll also cover shortcuts and best practices using a 3-button mouse.

Lesson 3 covers our basics of SketchUp Drawing techniques. We’ll go over creating lines, curves, surfaces as well as how to select specific elements of our models.

A co-planar model, is a core concept to understand when working in SketchUp. In this lesson, we look at what a co-planar model is, how to make your geometry co-planar and easy to troubleshoot.

Lesson 5 focuses on SketchUp’s inferencing system – a powerful feature that helps you draw with accuracy and alignment. You’ll learn how to use visual cues to snap to points, edges, midpoints, and align with axes. Mastering inferencing will make your modelling faster, cleaner, and far more precise.

In Lesson 6, we move beyond 2D and into the world of 3D modelling. Using tools such as the Push Pull tool and other selecting methods, we’ll convert surfaces into volumes and learn how to manipulate these shapes into more advanced geometry.

Lesson 7 covers Groups and Components – essential tools for organising your SketchUp models. You’ll learn the difference between these two, how to create them, and why grouping geometry is crucial to avoid unwanted changes when editing. Components also allow you to reuse objects easily, saving time and ensuring consistency throughout your design. By mastering groups and components, you’ll keep your models tidy and work more efficiently.

In Lesson 8, you’ll learn how to create copies and arrays of objects to speed up your modelling. We’ll cover simple copying techniques as well as how to make multiple evenly spaced duplicates using the Move tool’s array function. This skill is great for replicating repetitive elements like windows, posts, or tiles quickly and accurately.

Lesson 9 introduces tagging and organisation techniques to keep your models clear and manageable. You’ll learn how to use tags to control visibility, group related elements, and simplify complex projects. Effective tagging helps you navigate your model easily, improve performance, and present your work professionally.

In Lesson 10, you’ll put your new skills into practice by modelling a simple table from start to finish. This hands-on exercise guides you through applying drawing, 3D modelling, grouping, and tagging techniques. By the end, you’ll have a complete, organised model and a real sense of how to approach creating everyday objects in SketchUp.
